The Greater Bandon Association has named the recipient of its Volunteer of the Month award. Jim Proehl was recognized as the third winner of the new award. He was presented the award in the form of a plaque and a gift certificate donated by Winter River Books at the January 4 meeting of Bandon’s City Council.
Jim’s public-spirited contributions, particularly to Bandon’s youth, have distinguished him as an outstanding community volunteer. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 313 for approximately 30 years. While he has retired from the School District, he continues to assist with special projects at Ocean Crest Elementary and helps maintain the landscape at both Ocean Crest and the high school. He also assists with the community arts class and the Battle of the Books.
Jim’s passion for Bandon’s history has been demonstrated by his volunteer work at the Bandon Historical Society Museum. He is Vice President of the Board of Directors and will become President in 2016. He has presented history talks at the schools, Bullard’s Beach State Park, and the Port of Bandon as well as contributed articles on our history to local newspapers.
In addition, he has cared for both the G.A.R and Averill Pioneer historic cemeteries for the past twelve years. He contributes his time to the City as well as a member of the Tree Subcommittee of the City’s Parks and Recreation Commission.
The Greater Bandon Association will be honoring one of Bandon’s many volunteers that are making a difference in the community each month. Nominations for the February award should be e-mailed to julie@greaterbandon.org or mailed to P.O. Box 161 by close of business on January 22.
